England played their second game in the group stages of the European Championships yesterday, having just one point on the board after the late drama against Russia. However, it was England who had the last laugh this time around with a late goal from Daniel Sturridge completing the comeback and handing England all three points.
Before the game, there was a lot of talk going around in the media about such a significant and crucial game. Wales forward Gareth Bale and midfielder Aaron Ramsey came out saying they thought Wales had more passion than the England players, and that would give them the advantage in the game. However, England midfielder Jack Wilshere said the quality of the England squad will see them past Wales, and so it did.
England had the better of the first 40 minutes but was unable to finish their chances. Although, a foul on the edge of the area gave Gareth Bale a chance from a long way out. A mistake from Joe Hart saw the ball creep into the bottom corner giving Wales the lead at half-time. However, Roy Hodgson felt the need to make some changes at half-time which came to pleasure the England fans all around the country. He introduces Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy, who made all the difference.
Roy Hodgson now has a lot to think about going into their final group game with Slovakia. Does he go and drop Harry Kane? It is fair to say his performances haven’t matched up to what he was doing in the Premier League last season for Tottenham. And for me when Daniel Sturridge came on, the side looked sharper, and he was creating a lot more chances for England. Another player that hasn’t been showing his full potential is Raheem Sterling. He missed a glamorous chance in the first half to put England in front, and after that, his confidence seemed to get lower and lower.
Englands next game will be played on Monday against Slovakia. They know a win will take them through to the last 16 as winners of the group.
